『出雲国風土記』によると、出雲市平田町はかつて『楯縫郡』と呼ばれ、楯を作り献上していたとあります。また、この地の佐香神社に神々が集い、酒を醸し、百八十日に及ぶ宴を催したとあることから、日本酒発祥の地とされています。
